Early life and influences

Blake grew up in the mountains of West Virginia, where early exposure to classic bluegrass and country—artists such as Bill Monroe and Jimmy Martin—shaped his musical sensibility. He began singing and playing guitar as a child, steeped in the rich vocal traditions that would later define his “high, lonesome” sound. His upbringing in the Appalachian region remains a core influence on his songwriting and performance style. 

Career highlights

After training for the ministry and living in Kansas City, Blake performed with several groups including Jeff Scroggins and Colorado and The Bluegrass Missourians. In 2015, he released his debut solo album Songs of Heart & Home, featuring collaborations with top bluegrass musicians such as Claire Lynch, Laurie Lewis, and John Reischman. He joined The Special Consensus in 2021 as lead vocalist and guitarist. His 2023 album People, Places, and Songs and singles like “Bluefield Mountain Wind” and “Out of Control Raging Fire” earned widespread acclaim.

Blake is a two-time recipient of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Male Vocalist of the Year Award (2023, 2025) and a five-time SPBGMA Guitarist of the Year. Critics describe his performances as emotionally charged, technically masterful, and deeply rooted in bluegrass authenticity.

Now based in North Carolina, Blake continues to tour internationally with The Special Consensus and his own ensemble, Greg Blake & Hometown.
